This is why not only the programming philosophy is regularly changed so that it can keep up with emerging trends within the arts and the progress in cinematographic and video languages, but there’s also been a move towards (and an impact in) visual arts from which more and more artists emerge with new work to be shown in this Festival. Amid the cultural feeding frenzy in Scotland’s capital during August the Edinburgh Art Festival in theory provides a relative safe haven. The art won’t shout at you, it won’t make obscene jokes and expect a witty response, it won’t make a fool of you for the amusement of others. It will just be there, hanging quietly on a wall or sitting in a gallery, awaiting your consideration. However, don’t expect too much peace of mind from the innovative, challenging and sometimes downright harrowing work in this third-year programme. –Rachel Millard Scotland On Sunday
