The 15th Vila do Conde Shorts has kept its most promi­nent char­ac­ter­is­tic: evo­lu­tion. Instead of set­tling for a for­mula, right from the start, the Fes­ti­val chose to focus its atten­tion on trans­for­ma­tion and change while keep­ing an eye on every­thing that hap­pens in the field of cin­ema. This is why not only the pro­gram­ming phi­los­o­phy is reg­u­larly changed so that it can keep up with emerg­ing trends within the arts and the progress in cin­e­mato­graphic and video lan­guages, but there’s also been a move towards (and an impact in) visual arts from which more and more artists emerge with new work to be shown in this Fes­ti­val. Inten­sity, exper­i­men­ta­tion, and vis­ceral pres­ence are the hall­marks of the thir­teen sig­nif­i­cant one-person instal­la­tions that con­sti­tute SITE Santa Fe’s Sixth Inter­na­tional Bien­nial. Cura­tor Klaus Ottmann’s exhi­bi­tion, enti­tled Still Points of the Turn­ing World both con­cen­trates and ampli­fies these sin­gu­lar works, empow­er­ing them to speak for them­selves with­out the com­mon fil­ter of a pre­scrip­tive cura­to­r­ial theme. As Ottmann explains, ?I want this Bien­nial to be about the artists, not about the cura­tor.? The exhibition’s man­i­fest com­mit­ment to direct expe­ri­ence is designed to elicit a unique per­sonal response from each viewer.

The inter­na­tional art fair cir­cuit is the most glam­orous part of the art world today — the place where col­lec­tors and pur­vey­ors of fine con­tem­po­rary art come from around the world to meet and do busi­ness. A ris­ing star in this con­stel­la­tion of sophis­ti­cated events is ART Santa Fe, a bien­nial art fair that will be pre­sented July 12–15 at Santa Fe’s El Museo de Cul­tural. ART Santa Fe is known as a “bou­tique” fair. Amid the cul­tural feed­ing frenzy in Scotland’s cap­i­tal dur­ing August the Edin­burgh Art Fes­ti­val in the­ory pro­vides a rel­a­tive safe haven. The art won’t shout at you, it won’t make obscene jokes and expect a witty response, it won’t make a fool of you for the amuse­ment of oth­ers. It will just be there, hang­ing qui­etly on a wall or sit­ting in a gallery, await­ing your con­sid­er­a­tion. Fifty well known gal­leries will be com­ing to the 7th ?art bodensee? art fair in the west Aus­trian town of Dorn­birn this sum­mer. The Edin­burgh Fes­ti­val Fringe 2006 offered over 28,000 per­for­mances in 261 venues through­out the his­toric city of Edin­burgh. With over 1,800 dif­fer­ent shows to choose from (36% of which were World Pre­mieres) includ­ing com­edy, the­atre, dance, children’s shows, music fes­ti­val T on the Fringe and so much more, there’s plenty for every­one — no mat­ter what tick­les your fancy! Started in 1947, the EIFF is one of the true homes of inno­v­a­tive and excit­ing cin­ema. For over half-a-century, the Fes­ti­val has pre­sented some of cinema’s most impor­tant and excit­ing moments and played host to the world’s great­est film­mak­ers. The longest con­tin­u­ally run­ning film fes­ti­val in the world, it has come a long way from its begin­nings as a documentary-based fes­ti­val estab­lished in the wake of World War II. Its spirit was and is bold and its focus inter­na­tional: in the early years, it pre­miered such time­less clas­sics as Robert Flaherty’s Louisiana Story, Roberto Rossellini’s Ger­many Year Zero and Kenji Mizoguchi’s Ugetsu Monogatari.

The Helsinki Fes­ti­val is the most diverse event in the Finnish cul­tural cal­en­dar. The Festival’s pre­de­ces­sor was “Sibelius Weeks” (1951–1965) — fes­ti­val, which con­cen­trated in Sibelius’ music. The Helsinki Fes­ti­val was founded in 1968, and it aims to dis­play Finnish and inter­na­tional per­form­ing and cre­ative arts, while fea­tur­ing artists, ensem­bles and exhi­bi­tions of the high­est level.

ANTI — Con­tem­po­rary Art Fes­ti­val

ANTI — Con­tem­po­rary Art Fes­ti­val presents con­tem­po­rary art of all fields from sculp­ture and envi­ron­men­tal art to dance, live art and per­for­mance within Kuo­pio city spaces. Site-specific time based works take place in pre­s­e­lected loca­tions around the city cen­tre. The con­cept of ANTI is unique in the Finnish art scene. It is the only inter­na­tional fes­ti­val that presents some of the lat­est devel­op­ment in per­form­ing arts and artists that tra­verse the bor­ders of con­ven­tional sub­di­vi­sions in art within a city envi­ron­ment. ANTI offers an oppor­tu­nity for both Finnish and inter­na­tional artists to work out­side the so-called tra­di­tional art context.
