The first edi­tion of the “Bien­nial of the End of the World” (Bienal del Fin del Mundo) is an Argen­tinean con­tri­bu­tion to the Inter­na­tional Polar Year 2007/2008. The event is a joint project between Argentina and Brazil and is actu­al­ized by the Argen­tinean Fun­dación Patag­o­nia Arte y Desafío with the insti­tu­tional sup­port of the Fun­dação Memo­r­ial da América Latina from São Paulo, Brazil. Basi­cally, the Biennial’s theme can be sum­ma­rized as ” pon­der­ing at the end of the world, what other world is pos­si­ble ” (Pen­sar en el fin del mundo, qué otro mundo es posi­ble). An aes­thetic dis­course of such sorts shall be artic­u­lated by link­ing art and pol­i­tics with poetry, ecol­ogy and technology.

After receiv­ing 920 entries for the 2007 Port­land Museum of Art Bien­nial exhi­bi­tion, the Port­land Museum of Art is pleased to announce that 98 works by 61 artists have been selected for the show. This past sum­mer, artists sub­mit­ted 3,680 images to be con­sid­ered by a panel of three jurors: Ellen Miller, founder of Miller Block Gallery in Boston; John­nie Winona Ross, nation­ally rec­og­nized artist and for­mer fac­ulty mem­ber of the Maine Col­lege of Art; and Judith Stein, free­lance cura­tor, art critic, and author. The jurors spent a week­end in Sep­tem­ber view­ing images and select­ing the work for next year’s Bien­nial. Of the 61 artists cho­sen, 17 have exhib­ited in pre­vi­ous Bien­nial exhibitions.
