Art Fairs International Talks with John Martin

Art Fairs InterÂnaÂtional: Tell us a litÂtle bit about your past expeÂriÂences and your role at the fair.
John MarÂtin: I’m the fair direcÂtor of Art Dubai, and co-founder alongÂside Ben Floyd. I conÂtinue to run a gallery in LonÂdon, which has been open for 15 years. I also worked with Ralph Ward JackÂson to set up Art LonÂdon in 1998 which conÂtinÂues to run sucÂcessÂfully. ComÂing into the fair busiÂness from the gallery world has some logic behind it–when we began Art Dubai, we made it a priÂorÂity that the galÂleries were well looked after and, at the very least, had a great time when they were here. First and foreÂmost, the galÂleries are our clients; but it also has a knock-on effect for the visÂiÂtors if the gallery staff are enjoyÂing themÂselves. Art Dubai is in a beauÂtiÂful setÂting at MadÂiÂnat Jumeirah Arena, which overÂlooks the Gulf, and the relaxed enviÂronÂment means that there is a great atmosÂphere here. In that respect it is pretty unique–but defÂiÂnitely, from my gallery backÂground, I know that the sucÂcess of the fair depends on the qualÂity, effort, and risk of the galÂleries. You have to look after them.
AFI: How long has Art Dubai been going on for?
JM: The secÂond ediÂtion of Art Dubai takes place from March 19–22.
AFI: What is the relaÂtionÂship between the fair and the city of Dubai?
JM: I think it is true to say that withÂout the supÂport of the GovÂernÂment of Dubai, the fair would not have been the sucÂcess it was. Dubai is built on busiÂness and designed for busiÂness; there are many iniÂtiaÂtives and free zones that help entreÂpreÂneurs and make it an easy place to work. We were very forÂtuÂnate to have met the DIFC (the Dubai InterÂnaÂtional FinanÂcial CenÂter) in the early stages of the fair. DIFC is the locaÂtion and regÂuÂlaÂtory body for all finanÂcial instiÂtuÂtions in Dubai and is fast becomÂing one of the world’s major cenÂters, yet the GovÂerÂnor, His ExcelÂlency Dr. Omar Bin Sulaiman is also pasÂsionÂate about conÂtemÂpoÂrary art. DIFC talked to us, and looked at our busiÂness plan, and liked it. They aren’t sponÂsors, they are our partÂners in Art Dubai, and have actively helped us throughÂout the develÂopÂment. DIFC is part of the govÂernÂment of Dubai, and it shows the real comÂmitÂment to conÂtemÂpoÂrary art and the deep desire to estabÂlish Dubai as a major culÂtural cenÂtre. I also like the way that in Dubai, the GovÂernÂment trusts busiÂnesses and priÂvate indiÂvidÂuÂals to spearÂhead culÂtural iniÂtiaÂtives and growth.
AFI: What kind of work/ proÂgramÂming does the fair feaÂture?
JM: We see Art Dubai as repÂreÂsentÂing conÂtemÂpoÂrary art in a very wide region–Dubai is a brilÂliant place to view a huge artisÂtic arena. There is a seriÂous and stimÂuÂlatÂing art scene here and it is exhilÂaÂratÂing to come here from LonÂdon and feel part of an artisÂtic enviÂronÂment that is growÂing so quickly. It is excitÂing, relÂeÂvant, and origÂiÂnal; set in motion by some very pasÂsionÂate and intelÂliÂgent peoÂple at all levÂels and from all backÂgrounds. The imporÂtance of Dubai is how those seeds will take root and develop here. It isn’t a boomÂing art marÂket yet like LonÂdon or New York, but everyÂone knows that it will be in a matÂter of a few years. Dubai’s locaÂtion is of enorÂmous imporÂtance in this respect. The influences–artistic and commercial–come from right across the MidÂdle East, from EastÂern Europe, South Asia, and Africa. As those regions take off artisÂtiÂcally, there has to be a culÂtural hub for the exchange of ideas and for artists to exhibit their work. Artists from Asia now know that they can be sucÂcessÂful withÂout havÂing to go to the traÂdiÂtional art cenÂters of the West. Why? Because the cenÂter of influÂence has moved east, and because for conÂtemÂpoÂrary artists, colÂlecÂtors, and curaÂtors conÂcerned with the world as it is today, they must engage with Asia first and foreÂmost. Dubai is in the midÂdle of all that is excitÂing and new and difÂferÂent in the art world. This will attract artists, galÂleries, museÂums, and colÂlecÂtors. What Paris was in 1910, Dubai will be in 2010.
