Frieze Talks 2011:  13–16 Octo­ber 2011

Frieze Art Fair takes place every Octo­ber in Regent’s Park, Lon­don. The fair show­cases new and estab­lished artists to an inter­na­tional audience.

John Bock, Daniel Buren, Adam Cur­tis, Ali­son Knowles and Taryn Simon, are all part of the inter­na­tional line-up of highly respected artists, film­mak­ers, cura­tors and cul­tural com­men­ta­tors tak­ing part in Frieze Talks 2011.

Frieze Talks is a daily pro­gramme of keynote lec­tures, panel debates and dis­cus­sions that take place in the audi­to­rium at Frieze Art Fair. It is pre­sented by Frieze Foun­da­tion and pro­grammed by the edi­tors of frieze mag­a­zine, Jen­nifer Hig­gie, Jorg Heiser and Dan Fox.

Keynote lec­tures will be given by: artist Daniel Buren; award-winning jour­nal­ist and doc­u­men­tary film­maker, Adam Cur­tis; found­ing mem­ber of Fluxus, Ali­son Knowles; and Pro­fes­sor of Art His­tory, Hunter Col­lege, New York, Katy Siegel.

Panel dis­cus­sions led by Christy Lange, Vin­cenzo Latron­ico and Aaron Schus­ter will focus on cur­rent debates in con­tem­po­rary art and the­ory. Fea­tur­ing artists includ­ing Adam Broomberg, Oliver Cha­narin, Taryn Simon and Melanie Gilli­gan, as well as writ­ers Nana Oforiatt-Ayim and Tim­o­theus Ver­meulen. Top­ics include: ‘Shoot­ing Gallery’, a dis­cus­sion on the prob­lems of pho­to­graphic rep­re­sen­ta­tion; ‘Do You Speak Eng­lish?’, exam­in­ing how Eng­lish has become the lin­gua franca of the art world; and ‘On Tele­vi­sion’, which will ask why, despite its huge cul­tural sig­nif­i­cance, does tele­vi­sion not have a greater influ­ence on con­tem­po­rary art?

Also pre­sented will be a con­ver­sa­tion between John Bock and his for­mer teacher Franz Erhard Walther, in which they dis­cuss the legacy of Walther’s influ­en­tial edu­ca­tional role and his explo­ration of the pos­si­bil­i­ties of objects and images that prompt view­ers to do some­thing other than just look.
